Serbia, who finished ninth at the London Olympics and eighth in last year’s FIVB World League, completed a stunning opening weekend in this year’s World League by doing the double over Olympic champions Russia in Group B. After beating the Russians 3:2 on Friday, Serbia went one better on Saturday, winning the second match in the Serbian city of Nis 3:1 (21:25, 25:16, 25:18, 25:20) in front of more than 6,000 fans. Nemanja Petrić scored an impressive 28 points for the Serbs, while Denis Biriukov was Russia’s top scorer with 16 points. "This victory means a lot to us for the upcoming matches in the World League because it is not common to beat Russia twice in one weekend", said Serbia’s Marko Podrascanin. Taras Khtey, Russian wing-spiker added: "I wish, first of all, to congratulate the Serbian Team for their excellent game and victory. They are a young and promising team that has proven to be at a very high level. We said that we came with an experimental team and many players are not in their best condition. We all wanted to win and tried to come back with our game, but we failed to stay concentrated, and weren’t in a position to respond to the motivated Serbian Team". added 17:01 02/06/2014 in Matches, place 3595/13219

@hanus: The Russians did not play any of their starters, probably because the starters needed a break from the club season. On the Serbian team there are many young player. It is only a matter of time before Serbia is #1 in the world!
