Polish fans of volleyball heard for the first time about Mariusz Wlazły after Polish Cup 2001/02 matches between SPS Automark Zduńska Wola (club from second Polish League) and the best Polish club at that time: Kędzierzyn-Koźle. Kędzierzyn won in tie-break, but 19 years old Wlazły made a huge impression on fans thanks to his ace serves and spikes. Management of Kędzierzyn-Koźle was talking with admiration about Mariusz's skills and they told that he will be good enough to play in PLS (Polish Volleyball League). Fans of Kędzieryn-Koźle was asking their management to hire Mariusz in their club. Thanks to great play of Mariusz Wlazły his team from Zduńska Wola advanced to Polish Serie B. He stayed in Zduńska Wola for next (2002/03) season, but they fall into financial trouble and the only solution was selling Mariusz Wlazły to Skra Bełchatów. Money obtained from Mariusz's transfer saved club from bankruptcy. Mariusz signed 3 years contract with Skra Bełchatów in November 24, 2003. At first he was just reserve player, but he used to play in starting six during play-off's of Polish League 2003/04. He was absolutely revelation of play-off's round. Read some archival comments from that period about rising star, Mariusz Wlazły: "Wlazły is flying" (after match Skra - Kędzierzyn 3:0), "there is almost impossible to block Wlazły", "Wlazły can win whole set thanks to his serves", "Wlazły should play in starting six in Porto (The Olympics 2004 Qualifying Tournament)!" (after Skra - Częstochowa 3:2 in 2004-04-09 when Wlazły scored 6 aces in a row in tie-break), "Mariusz you are great! Get well soon! (...) Whole Poland will hear about Wlazły soon." (2004-04-08). In last matches of play-off's round he had shoulder injury, because he was the most exploited Skra's player in that period. Mariusz was awarded as the best player of Polish volleyball league in seasons 2005/06, 2007/08, 2009/10 and 2010/11. In season 2012/13 he played as wing-spiker, but now he return to his proper position.

Best opposite that Poland has ever had, what a pity that he had so much problems with injuries and the federation :(

My love to volleyball started with him, earlier I thought about volleyball as a regular sport but in 2005 Mariusz showed those extraordinary physical conditions and great technique that is the heart of volleyball. Coupled with Zagumny in national team, aswell as other very talented players from 2005-2008 period it was a delight to watch their play. I wish he would comeback to this great shape and to NT on WCH but at the moment he isn't as good as he was. Less technique and ferocity in his plays which make him less efficient from high balls.

Can anyone tell me why he had a year playing as wing spiker?

@hanus: Hi Hanus, I'm not totally sure about that, but I think since Skra signed Aleksandar Atanasijević, I think the coach wanted Aleksandar to play opposite (since he's good) but also wanted Mariusz on the starting six since he's a key player for Skra. He maybe tought it would be a better lineup. I personally think that he should have let Mariusz play opposite and signed a receiver or a setter instead, but i'm not a coach :p

@Frank: you're not 100% right. after season Kurek left Skra and club was looking for replacement. they signed Cala but Nawrocki (Skra's coach) wasn't satisfied with him and decided to make Wlazły a receiver (as he had good substitute in Atanasijevic). that's the whole story Atanasijevic was in Skra before (i mean that it wasn't his first season in Skra when Wlazły played as a receiver and Atanasijevic as spiker in starting six)

@hanus: Skra couldn't find a player to replace Kurek and Nawrocki wanted to continue the playstyle with one strong offensive receiver and one strong defensive receiver. Unfortunately Mariusz couldn't adapt to this position.

One of the greatest players, if not the greatest ever in history, that played for Skra!
